As long as Compaq sells every iPaq it can produce, I doubt they will "waste" time considering how to make the iPaq better: why bother? At this point, too many fixes will actually alienate the existing customer base.
I had hoped the iPaq would be my next PDA, replacing the Casio NX-6000 I carried for over four years; however, the pocket PACKAGE is of absolute importance, and the iPaq doesn't have the right stuff, yet...so I now have a Palm V with hardcase.
I'm disappointed, after all the hopes I had for the iPaq last year...but I actually like the Palm V more than I expected, having found some nifty applications.
With the Palm V, I can afford to wait what may be years for the "obvious" redesign that will make the iPaq, truly, a Pocket PC. My frustration (as expressed in, "Design for POCKET, not PURSE..." http://www.cecities.com/ubb/Forum19/HTML/000023.html )
is still present, but Compaq--or one of their competitors--will, I'm sure, eventually combine all the proper elements into whatever will be my next POCKET Data Assistant (including, but not limited to, small size, reflective LCD, adequate seals, and a built-in HARD SCREEN PROTECTOR that doesn't over-size the unit for a shirt pocket).
If Compaq created the perfect package tomorrow, they'd probably suffer from the thousands of early purchasers who wanted a free upgrade, so I suspect their hands are "tied" for quite some time...perhaps NEC will do it right the 1st time out... [sigh]
