Is this a fresh install of Vista and WMDC or an upgrade (hopefully an uninstall of ActiveSync before the upgrade)?
Fresh install of Vista and WMDC. I looked at the device and it reports a 0x85010017 error.
I hard reset and selected the items to sync 1 by 1 starting with contacts. I discovered that problem occurs with Notes. Having discovered that, I tried to unclick Notes but I cannot get the operation to complete as I get the same serve busy error again. I tried disconnecting and connecting again, soft reset device, reboot PC and it's the same problem.
What can I do besides doing another hard reset or delete partnership and unchecking notes then?

I'm running WM5 on an iPAQ 6910 and USB syncing with WMDC running on a Sony TZ21 laptop with Vista Business and Outlook 2007.
Four times out of five, when I put the iPAQ in the cradle it connects, the sync starts, everthing syncs OK until it starts to sync Notes. At some point it will get to: Notes xx of 101 where xx is any number between 1 and 100 and it will then just sit there forever. (I've never actually left it longer than an afternoon, but I'm willing to bet it would be forever.) Looking at the log, it says "Server Busy". It doesn't matter whether I'm using Outlook or not, this happens about four times out of five.
On each fifth occasion... hurrah! The sync goes through and works perfectly. I've tried restarting the laptop, soft resetting the iPAQ. Nothing seems to solve the problem permanently. Just persevering and trying again and again until it eventually works without stalling seems to be the only way.
If anyone has any solution to this that doesn't involve speculatively reinstalling Vista, hard re-setting the iPAQ or sacrificing a lamb at sunset then I'd love to hear it.
Many thanks for those suggestions. Yes, several of my Notes exceed 16Kb, and a lot include links. Funny, but I'd never have thought that such things could have caused problems. WMDC is clearly not a brilliant product.
Not sure how to go about upgrading the USB drivers. It's a new machine, and it's set to download Vista updates automatically although I do retain manual control over what actually is included. Whether or not the USB drivers were included I couldn't say. As you suggest, it would probably be a good thing to do.
At the moment I simply persevere with repeated soft resets, Vista restarts and switches of USB port until I eventually manage to get a Synch to go through. How anyone could have released this product on the market in this state boggles my mind.

I e-mailed my thanks a while back, but for anyone else's benefit here's what I did:
1. Reduced all my Notes to >16Kb (either by splitting them or by copying and pasting them into Notepad and then creating them again - this latter idea sometimes reduces the size of the text by over 50% for some reason)
2. Took out all of the links in my many Notes (by putting a space after the @ or the www)
